As the designer of the first generation Mazda MX-5 and fabled RX-7, Tom Matano needs no introduction from me. His work has earned him international acclaim as an automotive designer.
Now Executive Director of Industrial Design at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California, Road & Track sent a team out to pay him a visit and did a feature for the second Episode of their ‘Five Minute Car’ series.
It’s always interesting to see what a designer would create without upper management or marketing dictating their needs and wants. Tom’s resulting design is not what you’d expect, but I won’t ruin it for you either.
