John Anthony Sahs and Nicole Fonseca are two designers working for Nissan Design America. John is chief designer in Brazil, overseeing the design studio in Latin America, while Nicole, a senior color and materials manager, just returned to California from Japan and China, where she was on assignment for the past few years. In the video series below, recorded live on Nissan Design Latin America’s Instagram account, the designers discuss the importance of color and material design in automotive.

OUTSIDE INFLUENCES

In the first video in the series, John talks to Nicole about the different cultures (of Japan and China) she has experienced and talks about how this has influenced her in her work one of the fastest-growing areas in the car design industry.

In this second part of the interview, Color and Materials manager Nicole Fonseca provides insight into the design process and inspiration in creating the recent Nissan IMK and Ariya concept cars. She also discusses her jewelry line, everyday inspiration, and the challenges in achieving color accuracy in hand-painted concept cars.

In this final installment of the Color and Materials series, Nicole shows off some of the materials that suppliers sent her to review. She also discusses the importance of user experience and how the future will see an increase of technology integration embedded within materials.
